Manufacturer's Intent: The Concept redefines how core and cover combinations tackle challenging lane conditions, delivering a level of control and consistency that reactive balls alone often can’t achieve. Its ARC™ Pearl Coverstock acts as both the engine and the tires, gripping the lane to create continuous, predictable motion through the pins while the Radius Weight Block keeps the ball on line without locking up. Designed for situations where bowlers traditionally reach for urethane, the Concept shines on short patterns or flat, demanding conditions—anywhere you need a smooth, controlled reaction rather than a sharp backend hook. The Concept maintains consistent motion across the lane, carrying through the pins for strong, lively action. Designed as a two-piece ball with a thick resin shell, the 14-16lbs combine the smooth, predictable qualities of urethane with the versatility and driving power bowlers expect from a modern reactive ball.

Storm's new Concept is a shot at getting a new urethane option to accomplish a few things. First, they're looking to develop more friction and a larger footprint on the oil pattern versus traditional 78 hardness urethane like the IQ 78/U. Second, they're creating a ball that is legal in all competitions, including the Open and Women's Championships. Concept definitely delivers on these targets. It's important to remember that this isn't an everyone or every time bowling ball. This is a niche product that will excel in certain environments. It will also be more advantageous for particular players styles.

The first thing I noticed is that Concept offers a huge amount of early traction on the lane at its 1000 grit sanded surface. I've only had the chance to throw this ball at Olathe Lanes East so far, where the pattern is particularly dry. Frankly, the Concept really isn't in play at this center in the original box surface. But I did want to try it with the manufacturer's intended finish. At 1000 grit, Concept is incredibly early hooking and then offers a gentle arcing motion through the back two-thirds of the lane. Where the Concept would be much more usable would be anything with heavier volumes and shorter oil patterns. Think of the some of the recent years at the Open Championships, particularly on the singles/doubles pattern. I think Concept will also be far more in play for our no thumb or higher speed players who are looking to create controlled friction.

I drilled this ball quite a bit stronger than most of my stuff. This was done in the hopes to create some track flare. With a low differential under .020", Concept will tend to flare less than 1" for more bowlers. This is intentional. The best urethane or urethane-like ball reactions out there don't have large amounts of track flare. That actually tends to fight against what this type of reaction is trying to do. When you want that early and controlled backend, limited track flare is a usually a benefit.

I'm really curious how the Concept will roll with a little smoother finish, and plan on trying that in the coming weeks. Comparatively, you'll see Concept having far more hook and friction than other urethane options like the IQ 78/U or Purple Hammer. There is faster oil absorption and more surface on this piece than the others in the marketplace.
